7 Mistakes You're Making with Your Bullet Seating Micrometer (And How to Set 'Em Right)

The early morning sun creeps across the workbench, catching the glint of polished brass. Outside, the wind howls through the canyon, but inside, it’s quiet. Just the rhythmic click of the press and the faint scent of gun oil and old leather. You’re chasing that perfect group, the kind that makes a man proud when he’s out on the range or tracking a buck through the brush.

Precision is a tradition in the West. It’s the difference between a clean shot and a story about "the one that got away." For the modern marksman, the bullet seating micrometer is the ultimate tool for fine-tuning that accuracy. But even the best gunsmithing tools can lead you astray if you don’t treat ‘em with the respect they deserve.

Many a handloader thinks that just because they’ve bolted a high-end bullet seating micrometer onto their press, their groups will automatically shrink. It doesn’t work that way. Like a wild stallion, you’ve got to know how to break it in and ride it right.

Here are the seven common mistakes we see folks making at the Western Gun Store, and exactly how to fix ‘em.


1. Setting the Die Body Without a Shell Holder

The biggest mistake happens before the micrometer even moves. If your die body isn’t seated correctly in the press, the micrometer readings are about as useful as a map in a dust storm.

You need to ensure your die body is locked down at the right height. Most folks screw the die down until it touches the shell holder set at the top of the stroke, then back it off a hair. If you leave it loose, or if it's too deep, you’re introducing "slop" into the system. That slop translates to inconsistent seating depths, no matter what the dial says.

The Fix: Raise the ram with your shell holder in place. Screw the die body down until it firmly kisses the shell holder. Back it off about 1/16th of a turn to ensure you aren't "camming over" too hard on the die, then lock the ring.

2. Measuring COAL Instead of CBTO

Cartridge Overall Length (COAL) is what the manuals tell you, but it’s a lie: or at least, a half-truth. Bullet tips are inconsistent. They get dinged in the box, or the lead tips vary by a few thousandths.

If you’re adjusting your Redding reloading dies based on the tip of the bullet, you’ll never get the consistency you need for long-range work. You need to measure from the base to the ogive (CBTO): the spot where the bullet actually contacts the rifling.

The Fix: Use a bullet comparator. This tool allows your micrometer to do what it was born for: making precise adjustments based on the bearing surface of the bullet, not the uneven tip.

3. Ignoring Neck Tension

You can have the finest reloading equipment for sale in the country, but if your brass isn’t prepared right, that micrometer is just spinning wheels. If your neck tension is inconsistent, the force required to seat the bullet changes.

Too much tension, and you’re deforming the bullet. Too little, and the bullet can jump forward under recoil. This makes your micrometer adjustments feel "spongy."

The Fix: Ensure your brass is annealed and that you’re using a consistent neck sizing process. A little bit of dry neck lube goes a long way in making that seating stroke feel smooth as silk.

4. Forgetting to Account for "Spring Back"

Steel and brass have a memory. When you push a bullet into a case, the press and the die flex just a tiny bit. Then the brass pushes back. If you’re loading compressed charges: where the powder is packed tight: the powder can actually push the bullet back out a thousandth or two after it leaves the die.

The Fix: When working with compressed loads, hold the ram at the top of the stroke for a second. Let the pressure stabilize. Always double-check your first five rounds after a micrometer adjustment to see if the depth is holding true once the cartridge "settles."

5. Over-Trusting the Factory Zero

A common rookie mistake is assuming the "zero" on the micrometer matches your specific chamber. Every rifle is a law unto itself. What works in a neighbor’s bolt-action might be a disaster in yours.

6. The "Dirty Die" Syndrome

Out here, dust is a way of life. But dust inside a seating die is the enemy of precision. Lube, carbon, and tiny shavings of copper can build up inside the seating stem. This buildup changes the geometry of how the stem pushes on the bullet.

If your Lee Precision reloading equipment or Redding dies start giving you erratic readings, don't reach for the wrench. Reach for the solvent.

The Fix: Periodically disassemble the seating die and clean the stem with a Q-tip and a bit of degreaser. A clean die is an honest die.

7. Cranking the Micrometer Under Pressure

The micrometer is a delicate instrument, more like a watch than a hammer. One of the worst things you can do is try to turn the adjustment knob while the bullet is still pressed up inside the die. This puts unnecessary strain on the threads and can lead to premature wear or even stripping.

The Fix: Always lower the ram before making an adjustment. Click it to your desired setting, then raise the ram again. The satisfying click of a well-made dial is the sound of precision: don't ruin it by forcing it.
